Celebrate Tamil New Year with us

Sutton for Peace and Justice invites you to Celebrate Tamil New Year at a cultural evening with members of the local Tamil community

On Friday 15 April 2011, 6.30 – 9.00 pm.

At Greenshaw High School, Grennell Road Sutton, SM1 3DY.

The programme will include performances of traditional music and dance by the Sutton Tamil School; a light buffet of typical Tamil food; displays of musical instruments and information about the Sutton Tamil School and Child Aid Lanka’s work in Sri Lanka; and a chance to meet informally with members of the local Tamil community.

The Tamil New Year, or Puthandu, generally falls on April 14 of the Gregorian calendar.  This day, which coincides with the Nirayanam vernal equinox, is the first day of Tamil month Chithirai, and is the start of the traditional Tamil calendar, which follows the Hindu solar calendar.

Tamil New Year is a public holiday in Tamil Nadu (southerm India) and Sri Lanka and is celebrated by Tamil communities across the world, particularly in Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius and South Africa.

Our Tamil New Year event will be raising funds for flood relief in Sri Lanka, and we ask for donations to our partner charity Child Aid Lanka (see also http://www.childaidlanka.org.uk).

To reserve your place to celebrate Tamil New Year with us: email sutton4peace@yahoo.co.uk or phone/text 07740 594496.
